How we tested
Testing was conducted in isolated virtual machines running Windows 11. Each suite was installed fresh and updated to the latest definitions before exposure to the malware set. We measured: detection rate (percentage of threats blocked before execution), false positive rate (legitimate software flagged incorrectly), system performance impact (CPU and RAM overhead during real-time scanning and scheduled scans), and time to detection on zero-day-style samples using heuristics/behavioral analysis.

Many users run Malwarebytes alongside another primary antivirus. It is also the most affordable option and has the cleanest, most straightforward UI. What traditional antivirus misses
Every suite in our test missed at least some fileless malware — threats that operate entirely in memory, never writing to disk. Signature-based detection cannot catch what it has never seen. The gap between "99% detection" and "100% detection" is exactly where sophisticated attackers operate. Layered defenses — antivirus plus network monitoring, plus behavioral EDR where applicable — remain the gold standard for serious protection.
Free antivirus — is it enough?
Windows Defender (built into Windows 11) scored 96.8% in our tests — a legitimately competitive result. For basic users who practice good digital hygiene and do not handle sensitive financial data, Defender is adequate. The gap opens when you need additional features: password managers, VPNs, dark web monitoring, identity protection, and dedicated ransomware rollback. Paid suites justify their cost through the breadth of protection, not detection rates alone.
