What an IP address actually reveals
An IP address is not just a routing number. It is a fingerprint that correlates to a physical location and a network identity. Here is what any website — or any person running a basic lookup — can extract:
- City and region — IP geolocation databases resolve most addresses to within 25–50km of the actual device location. For urban areas, it is often down to the city block.
- ISP and organization — Your internet service provider is publicly listed in routing databases (WHOIS, BGP data). This often includes corporate VPN IPs being identified as employee connections.
- Connection type — Residential, business, datacenter, Tor exit node, or known proxy. Sites use this to apply different trust levels or block access entirely.
- Threat intelligence flags — IP reputation databases (used by security tools, ad networks, and fraud systems) flag IPs associated with spam, scanning, or malicious activity. A shared IP from a hacked neighbor can flag your address.
- ASN (Autonomous System Number) — The routing block your IP belongs to. Reveals the upstream carrier and can identify corporate or institutional networks even when the specific IP is unknown.
- Reverse DNS — Many ISPs set rDNS records that include your hostname — sometimes including your city or region in the hostname string itself.

What websites do with your IP
Beyond the technical exposure, here is how your IP is actively used against your interests:
Price discrimination
Airlines, hotels, and e-commerce platforms adjust prices based on detected location. A user connecting from a high-income zip code can see prices 15–40% higher than the same search from a lower-income area or a foreign IP. This is well-documented in academic research on dynamic pricing.
Cross-site tracking without cookies
Even with cookies cleared and tracking blocked, your IP address combined with browser fingerprint creates a persistent identifier. Ad networks use this to track you across properties — including incognito mode, which does nothing to your IP.
Content geo-blocking
Streaming libraries, news paywalls, and software pricing all vary by location. Your IP is the primary mechanism for enforcing these restrictions.
OSINT and doxing
In gaming, forums, or online disputes, a motivated individual can request your IP from a platform (or capture it directly via a link you click). From that, they can narrow your location to a neighborhood and, via ISP subpoena or social engineering, potentially further.
How to limit the exposure

What a VPN does not fix
A VPN is not a silver bullet. It does not protect against:

- Logged-in accounts — Google, Facebook, and any site you are logged into know exactly who you are regardless of your IP. A VPN does not log you out of your accounts.
- Malware and data leaks — A VPN encrypts traffic in transit. It does nothing for data compromised on the server side or by malware on your device.
